What not to put down there

Grease is the disposal's worst enemy — it coats the chamber and glues food particles into the biofilm that feeds odor. Fibrous scraps (celery, corn husks), starchy loads (rice, potato peels) and coffee grounds build sludge too. A good rule: the disposal is for small scraps rinsed off plates, not a second trash can. Combined with periodic deep cleaning, that habit keeps the sink area genuinely sanitary.
