The right way to run a purifier

Placement and habits matter almost as much as maintenance: run it in the room you sleep in, keep it a foot off the wall so intake isn't starved, and resist turning it off at night — the hours you're in the room are the hours that count. And size matters: a small bedroom unit "cleaning" an open-plan living room is just ambience. How often do HEPA filters need replacing?

Most manufacturers say 6–12 months, but that assumes normal air. An LA fire season can consume months of filter life in weeks. If the filter looks gray or airflow feels weak, it's due regardless of the calendar.

Can a dirty air purifier make air quality worse?

It stops helping and can start harboring — a saturated unit collects dust inside the housing and recirculates air essentially unfiltered, while giving you false confidence. Regular service keeps it a purifier instead of a fan.
